Nondrying ambuscade

TCHS went pretty well yesterday... sort of. I did come in 7th (hooray) and I'm almost yellow (10 points away or something), but the problems were really trivial. The fact that I actually got the 1000 (along with like 40 other people) is kind of sad. Anyway, hopefully I do as well in the tournament matches. Josh also finally got a positive score on this one (so, yeah, it was kinda easy)! But since tons of people got positive scores, his rating only increased by about 10 :S.

Anyway, if I found the TCHS annoying, Gamespy is just pure evil with their GotY awards this year (http://goty.gamespy.com/2007/). Halo 3 only sixth in XBOX 360 awards?? I understand they may not have thought that Halo 3 brought much new 'innovative' stuff to the franchise but it is still a brilliantly constructed game. Better than Rock Band anyway, however fun it may be at parties. And for some reason, the Gamespy people seem to be addicted to Call of Duty 4, giving it #1 in 3 different categories (probably the only one, in my opinion, that actually deserved it as #1 is the PS3, which has very few decent games). Ranking 360 myself it would probably be something more like:

1. Halo 3
2. Mass Effect
3. The Orange Box (2 and 3 is a tough call for me... swap them if you want).
4. BioShock
5. Rock Band
6. Call of Duty 4
etc.

In other categories, I think it's about fair. I haven't gotten many PC games over this year but it makes sense (although personally I think Burning Crusade is a better expansion than that other Galactic Civilizations one). For Wii I was a bit disappointed that Super Paper Mario which I really enjoyed only got 9th (below games that I heard were so-so), but SMG and the Metroid Prime were obvious 1st and 2nds.

Anyway, the above is mainly my opinion (although a lot of people I know do agree Halo 3 deserves 1st... or at least higher than 6th). Maybe the people at Gamespy are less biased taken together, but whatever. From now it looks like either SMG or Call of Duty 4 will win GotY, but honestly I didn't feel like CoD4 was GotY material. It'll be interesting to see how the Gamer's Choice compares (I have a feeling Halo 3 will be treated much better, but maybe Gamespy is a better judge than I am).

Anyway, if you've played Mass Effect, check out the three Mass Effect Penny Arcade comics; they are pretty funny. Two other things... I was just made aware of Zoho (www.zoho.com), which is basically a pretty awesome online Microsoft Word. I think I might switch to that just so when I do something dumb like forget to print out something I'll still have access to it.

Thirdly, my copy of Coding and Information Theory by Hamming finally arrived yesterday. It has got some pretty good stuff, especially for a 20 year old book, and is pretty interesting if you've ever thought about problems like "how to make a file compressor" or information transfer and the like.

Halo3 is highly over rated truely there are better FPSs (is there a plural of FPS?) and gamespy is fair to say it isnt bringing anything new to the field.

I agree that perhaps Halo 3 didn't innovate too much on their model from the first two Halo's, but honestly, if you have a recipe that works well there's no reason to deviate from it.

Anyone going into Halo 3 from Halo and Halo 2 is going to expect the same grenade-throwing, meleeing, vehicle-driving action that made the first two Halo's so amazing - and Bungie perfected this for Halo 3.

Of course, there was a lot of hype for Halo 3, but Halo 3 deserved most of it. I had a lot more fun playing Halo 3 than other new 'innovative' FPS's like BioShock or Call of Duty 4 (mind you, they're still excellent games). A lot of people I know agree with that, but perhaps Gamespy is more representative of the actual gamer population.

In any case, it will be interesting to see how Halo 3 is ranked by the majority of gamers in the Gamer's Choice Award, as opposed to the 10 or so staff at Gamespy who chose it as 6th.

At first I was thinking that since halo3 is just halo2 + graphics and a gravity hammer, it probably didn't deserve gotY again... but then I realised that civ4 is the same situation (though, admittedly, it is more improved from civ3 than halo3 is from halo2) so I dunno... but as for the FPS genre in general, Id ahve to say HALO is the best (though UT is pretty good too)

uh... guys i was getting at older fps ( I'm pretty sure now that it doesnt change in its plural) such as golden eye 64 which defined an fps and set the bar and unfortunately i don't think that bar has been reached since then.
I will however that playing halo is more fun than playing bioshock but i don't think it's just me many people want something different whether it be a redesign of the fps or a different genre of gaming altogether. I mean the best games on wii and ds this year were advernture/platformer/party games and old virtual console games. the ps3 had.... well it sorta explains why less ps3 are selling, not enough games people want, and the 360 seems to be only fps. maybe it is time to look past inovation and to another genre altogether.

final thing- gunstar heroes = awesome.
