I noticed that Jon's posts were on a much more serious (or at least they stayed on one topic and discussed it a bit) subject, so I will attempt to do this as well:
People nowadays are getting too good at just about everything. In amhist the other day, the teacher said that when factories appeared in America, it decreased the skill of citizens, because they just learned how to operate a machine to do a small part of an overall job instead of how to do the job. Like, making shoes for instance, people only learned how to operate the sewing machine as opposed to getting leather from a cow, then cutting it correctly, then shaping it in the shape of a person's foot, etc... I would think, therefore, that nowadays noone would be skilled at anything! This, however, is not the case.
I first started noticing this with Rubik's Cubes. At first, Jon got one, then I got one, and people always said "oh, youre so good at that, you must be so smart and have a world record" and such. When I went on the internet to see whether this was the case (the record, I already know Im smart :P) I was nowhere close. Just the other day, someone set a record for being able to solve the cube blindfolded faster than I solve it normally. Back in the 60s, I may have been one of the top speedcubers in Canada, but today I'm just average.
This is annoying, because it is very discouraging to read that to achieve your goal, you somehow have to make your hands move fast enough to solve the cube in 10 seconds, not to mention memorize lots of algorithms and figure out what to do all the time. So many people are taking up cubing nowadays, but I would be surprised if any of them keep it up for long, considering its near impossible to become the best at it. I would say that people would do it as a hobby, like I did, but quite frankly, it gets boring after 2 or 3 months.
This can be seen in lots of things nowadays... Topcoder (though I guess its not as impossible to get good at it, you just need to practice alot, and its different every time so its more fun), instrument playing (how could anyone beat amir without having played since they were 2), sc (though I guess you can improve, it just takes a very long time... and the Koreans are too good!), etc...
On a side note, today I realized that I hate hair cutters much more than I thought I did, but Ill save that for the next entry (that way I wont have to come up with something else to write about). Till next time!

Hm... yeah people are getting too good at stuff these days. With competition I guess it will never end like the jump rope girl. I guess if you spend all your time on something you're really good at you're bound to be better at it than the average person right?
